Personalized Jewelry Origins

The art of Engraving

There are hundreds of different personalized jewelry styles available to the jewelry gift shipper.  Heart pendants, couples jewelry, mother’s day jewelry, personalized rings, personalized necklaces and many more styles. These styles all share one thing in common; they are created using a precious metal and are engraved or etched using the art of engraving.

Personalize jewelry was originally created a way to show ownership of an item, such as a personalized ring or personalized necklace.  These designs can often be found set with diamonds and gemstones, to enhance the beauty and meaning especially in the case of couples jewelry.

Engraved personalized jewelry can be found all the way back to pre-historic times when tools were first being used to carve stone and etch rock. Images are commonly found on the walls of caves showing animal designs that reflect the daily routines of early human populations. Over the years engraving, and engraving technology has progressed drastically from using rocks, to high speed rotary engraving, to laser cutting and engraving of highly complex personalized jewelry designs.

Any art student that has tried to use engraving tools in a college class, or carved Greek letters for their fraternity or sorority into a paddle, will know the amount of skill required to use engraving tools. Personalized jewelry requires the artist to work on a very small canvas and with a high degree of precision (see laser engraving). A personalized jewelry necklace can require thousands of carefully chosen movements and require incredible experience to complete. Now add the complexity of a curved silver or gold ring, or personalized watch and the complexity only compounds.

Personalized Necklace

Personalized necklaces pose a unique challenge because the necklace connects to the jewelry y at to separate points rather than being attached to the jewelry by a loop. There are several features of personalized necklaces that the buyer can look for to determine the quality of the engraving. First, it is important to notice the symmetry of the piece, and ensure that the chain connects to the personalized necklace in such a way that it hangs evenly on the neck. Second, it is important to look for clean, crisp, engraving around curves in the jewelry. Cursive letters are the hardest to engrave properly, closely examine letters with strong curves such as “L, Z, R, “ etc. You should feel no burs or roughness around the edges of the jewelry.

Personalized Jewelry Engraving Methods

During the very early years of humanity engraving took place using sharp stones, and rough tools. In more recent times a chisel and hammer have been used, and with the advent of the personal computer engraving has been taken to new heights. Today computers can translate a complex artist rendering to a real-life piece of gold or silver jewelry in a matter of minutes. What used to take years to engrave is now possible in moments. Today Personalized Jewelry uses a laser to cut and engrave gold and silver personalized jewelry. Our process enables a level of accuracy and detail not usually available to jewelry gift buyers.

Personalized Jewelry History

The first examples of personalized jewelry can be found approximately 65,000BP on carved ostrich eggs. Of course, more modern examples date to approximately the 14th or 15th century AD, and are found in western Europe.  Personalized jewelry is both beautiful and durable, and has been necklaces, pendants, rings, and watches are regularly passed down from generation to generation requiring only regular polishing to maintain shine and brilliance.

Personalized Couples Jewelry

Couples jewelry is by far one of the most special collections Personalized Jewelry has to offer. We regularly engrave gold and silver jewelry for young couples, married couples, best friends, mother’s day, and even for Mom/Daughter & Dad/Son.  Couples jewelry typically consists of a sterling silver or either 10 or 14K gold. Our personalized couples jewelry designs are typically split in two, as in two halves of a heart or a “split heart” necklace or pendant. Each half of the couples jewelry is engraved with a name of the gift buyer’s choosing and is delivered with two necklaces so each person has a half of the completed couples jewelry.

Many people comment that their gold and silver jewelry tarnishes quickly after the initial purchase. Personalized Jewelry takes the extra time to coat all our jewelry with a highly quality rhodium finish which helps prevent tarnishing, and scratches. This extra step is usually skipped by most jewelers because it adds to the cost and time it takes to make the jewelry.

14K Gold Necklaces

14 k gold necklaces are made of 58.3% pure (24K) gold; the remaining 41.7% of alloy elements include nickel, copper, silver and zinc. These other elements affect the color and hardness of the metal. Copper is most commonly used to create “Rose Gold” and can give gold a rose color when used in higher concentrations of 14K gold necklaces and jewelry.  Silver is the most common alloy in “white gold” the addition of a large percentage of silver causes the 14K yellow gold to hue white.
